Moran outpaces Tiahrt in first quarter of Kansas Senate race

Rep. Jerry Moran (R) outpaced Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R) in first quarter fundraising in what is likely to be a competitive GOP primary for retiring Sen. Sam Brownback’s (R) Kansas Senate seat.

Moran hauled in more than $522,000 while Tiahrt raised approximately $391,000.

In a statement, Moran thanked his supporters.

β€œI am truly humbled by the outpouring of support and donations from all corners of the state for this campaign,” he said. β€œThe amount of energy and enthusiasm from Kansans demonstrates that they are tired of business as usual in Washington, D.C.”

Where Moran holds a larger advantage, though, is in cash on hand. Moran finished the quarter with $2.92 million in his war chest, more than double the $1.31 million that Tiahrt has.

Moran raised about $341,000 in contributions from individuals and took in $169,000 from other political committees, such as Political Action Committees. His campaign touted that more than 2,000 Kansans from across the state contributed to his campaign.

Tiahrt, meanwhile, said in a statement that his campaign is on track to raise what it needs to win.

“Having launched my campaign for Senate less than three months ago, I am pleased with the overwhelming support I am getting from Kansans all across the state,” he said. “With nearly $400,000 raised in the first quarter, we are closing the generosity gap. We are on schedule to raise every dollar needed to help carry our message to voters in Kansas and win the election in 2010.”

Brownback is running for governor.
