Jerry Moran launches effort to repeal health care takeover

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Jerry Moran (R-KS) introduced legislation today to repeal the Obama-Pelosi health care plan that passed the U.S. House of Representatives on Sunday evening.  Conservative leader U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC), who has strongly endorsed Moran’s Senate campaign, plans to introduce similar legislation this week.

“Americans want common sense health care reform that improves our current system and reduces costs. The bill that passed the House last night fails these objectives – instead, it will jeopardize Kansans’ access to care, stifle businesses with job-killing tax hikes, increase our national deficit, and allow the Federal government to intrude upon the most personal decisions Americans make every day,” Moran said.

“What was passed last night is shockingly inconsistent with the historical relationship between our citizens and their government established by our Constitution,” Moran added.  “Growing government through tax hikes, deficit spending, Medicare cuts, and budget gimmicks is the wrong direction for America and we need to repeal this flawed bill before the massive bureaucracy entrenches itself at the expense of the American people.”

Moran has steadfastly supported common sense reforms to make health care more accessible and affordable.  To reduce health care costs that drive up the price of insurance, Moran has called for strong medical liability reform to reduce lawsuit abuse to end the costly practice of “defensive medicine,” and allowing Americans to purchase health insurance across state lines to increase competition in the marketplace and create a robust market of insurance options.

“I am extremely disappointed that President Obama and Speaker Pelosi have chosen to go their own way on health care reform, deliberately ignoring the American people. Kansans are fed up with this ‘Washington knows best’ attitude – an approach that tramples on our Constitution, diminishes personal responsibility, and jeopardizes prosperity for our children and our nation.”

Moran, anticipating the Obama-Pelosi gamesmanship, was one of the first Members of Congress to sign The Club for Growth’s ‘Repeal It!’ pledge, committing to repeal the Obama-Pelosi health care legislation, replacing it with real reforms that lower costs without growing the government.

“Today I am proud to introduce legislation to undo in the light of day what Speaker Pelosi has done behind closed doors.”  Moran said.

Moran is Chairman of the House Rural Health Care Coalition and co-founder of the Congressional Community Pharmacy Coalition.
