American Conservative Union Gives Moran 96% Rating

Kansas First District Congressman and U.S. Senate Candidate Jerry Moran (R-Hays) received a 96 percent rating from the American Conservative Union (ACU) for 2009, tying him for the highest rating among the Kansas delegation. In 2008, Moran was rated the most conservative member of the Kansas delegation with a 92 percent rating.

“The ACU ratings affirm that my votes to restrain federal spending and reduce government bureaucracy have been consistent with the conservative values of Kansas,” Moran said.  “More importantly, I’ve consistently stood for limited government, regardless of which party has been in power.”

While Moran respects ACU’s rating system and supports its fight to restore conservative principles to the federal government, Moran suggested that Kansans need to consider his rival’s forays into big government over the past few years.

“Congressman Todd Tiahrt’s ACU rating should come with a big asterisk,” Moran said. “He has wasted billions of taxpayer dollars by supporting programs like ‘Cash for Clunkers;’ earmarks for pork barrel projects; a massive, unfunded expansion of the Medicare program; the DREAM Act to give tuition assistance and other benefits to the children of illegal aliens; and No Child Left Behind, which was the largest federal expansion into education policy in the nation’s history.”

“You have to put principle first, no matter which party is in power,” Moran said. “I’ve done that consistently. Todd Tiahrt has not.”

In fact, in 2009 Tiahrt received a low 29 percent rating from the fiscally conservative group Club for Growth’s “RePork Card”.  Moran received a 96 percent rating.

Moran is the leading conservative candidate in the U.S. Senate race in Kansas to succeed Sam Brownback, who is retiring. He was one of the first Members of Congress to sign the “Repeal It!” pledge to rescind any enacted legislation directing a government takeover of our nation’s health care system. Moran was one of only 17 GOP Members of Congress to vote against every bailout, “Cash for Clunkers” and stimulus package. He supports the Congressional Accountability Act to end wasteful earmarks. Moran has earned a 100 percent rating on pro-life, pro-family issues from the Family Research Council.

Moran has endorsements from seven current U.S. Senators and Representatives: Sens. Richard Burr (R-NC), Tom Coburn (R-OK), Jim DeMint (R-SC), Mike Johanns (R-NE), John McCain (R-AZ), and John Thune (R-SD), as well as Rep. Jeff Flake (R-AZ). In addition, former U.S. Sen. Jim Talent (R-MO) and former U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) have also endorsed Moran’s candidacy.
