Like many Washington politicians, Todd Tiahrt has a long history of keeping things hidden. From keeping earmarks hidden from the public, to hiding his longstanding support for controversial immigration policies, (to hiding his relationship with the now-defunct PMA group from the Office of Congressional Ethics,) to hiding his support for more Washington government spending, Tiahrt has kept Kansans in the dark about much of his record since living in Washington.
“It’s disappointing to see Todd Tiahrt run from his Washington record of increasing spending and opposing greater transparency,” said Communications Director Dan Conston. “He can try to keep Kansans in the dark, but they know he is just another politician gone Washington.”
TODD TIAHRT TONIGHT: “…I thought it was compassionate to not punish the children for the parent’s sins…”
FACT #1: Tiahrt supported amnesty and lower in-state tuition benefits for illegal immigrants. (H.R. 1918, Student Adjustment Act of 2001, Cosponsor, October 9 2003; H.R. 1684, Student Adjustment Act of 2003, Cosponsor April 9 2003)
“[GOP candidate Kris] Kobach’s immigration views run contrary to some in his own party, including Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., and Rep. Todd Tiahrt, R-Goddard. Both Brownback and Tiahrt support the Dream Act, which would repeal a federal law discouraging states from offering in-state tuition and other benefits to undocumented immigrants.” (“Kobach Cites ‘Huge Gaps’ In U.S. Immigration Law,” Wichita Eagle, July 20 2004)
“DREAM stands for the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act…. While they haven’t formally endorsed the federal proposal, the Kansas Board of Regents issued a statement last year praising the Kansas congressmen who agreed to co-sponsor the bill. They are Sen. Sam Brownback, Rep. Dennis Moore and Rep. Todd Tiahrt.” (“Plan would open doors for undocumented college grads,” Harris News Service, July 7 2005)
