Senator Mike Johanns of Nebraska Endorses Rep. Jerry Moran (KS-01) for U.S. Senate

May 12, 2009 – United States Senator Mike Johanns of Nebraska today announced his endorsement of Congressman Jerry Moran’s bid for the U.S. Senate in 2010.

“A leader both in Kansas and nationally, I look forward to having Jerry Moran as part of the United States Senate,” Sen. Johanns said. “Jerry has established himself as a principled conservative who listens to the people he represents. Among the few national leaders in agriculture, Jerry has been a driving force in agriculture policy throughout his time in Congress, but has never lost sight of the people for whom he works. As it is in Nebraska, Kansans need to have someone that represents their interests and not the powers of Washington, D.C. Jerry will make a great United States Senator.”

Senator Johanns was elected to his seat in 2008 after serving as the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. The former two-term Nebraska Governor has had a long career of public service, focusing on issues important to Nebraska such as tax relief, protecting families, and shrinking the size and reach of the federal government.

As Agriculture Secretary, Johanns often consulted with Moran, a senior House Agriculture Committee member. Secretary Johanns also worked with Moran on opening additional markets for American farmers and ranchers and how best to serve family farmers across the country.

“A great public servant, Senator Johanns serves Nebraska and our country well,” Moran said. “We have unique challenges in our part of the country. But instilled within us all is the hearty pioneer spirit that led our forefathers out to settle the American plains. It is with that spirit that I approach this campaign and I look forward to working with Senator Johanns to ensure a bright future for families across our state.”

Today’s endorsement follows the endorsement from Oklahoma Senator and national conservative leader, Tom Coburn. Moran is the leading candidate to replace Sam Brownback in the United States Senate in 2010. The only poll conducted by a Republican polling firm showed Moran up by 16 percent over his nearest competitor.
